Anna Verrijt
The artist who continuously seeks new boundaries doesn’t make things easy for herself. But the work that emerges shows constant development and never bores; it is like the trace left behind by an explorer. Anna Verrijt keeps the tension alive. Anna Verrijt builds her work from many transparent layers, each remaining more or less visible. Her work often takes quite a beating: Verrijt uses a knife to scratch and scrape away paint, or she rigorously applies a sander. All these traces remain visible, and each painting tells the story of its creation. In addition to acrylic paint, Verrijt uses pieces of printed paper, old photos, letters, and other found materials. She might incorporate a candy wrapper into a painting, simply because the color or pattern inspires her, or because it holds a certain meaning for her. Each painting is like a diary entry, a note of major and minor events. A bird suddenly taking flight, a shocking phone call, or a song on the radio: their atmosphere is captured in the work. While the artist continually reinvents herself, certain constants remain throughout all her developments, characteristics that are typical of Anna Verrijt’s work. Even in her earliest, non-abstract works, they are recognizable: humor, poetry, and wonder. The abstract paintings on canvas and panel reveal their lighthearted, subtle humor in a playful swirl or a title like Freud Revisited. Here and there, you see suggestive hints of reality or symbolic forms.
