Carry Doorn

The Netherlands, 1962

Carry (1962) studied Fashion Design at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). After a long career as a fashion designer, creating both commercial collections and unique bridal wear, evening dresses and interior textiles, her focus shifted towards the visual arts. What was already present in her fashion work – the exploration of transparency, layering and the tension between strength and softness – has become the foundation of her sculptural practice. She works with transparent materials such as metal mesh and tulle, creating threedimensional sculptures and installations that enter into dialogue with light and movement. The work transforms continuously with the viewer’s gaze: from every angle a new perspective of colour and form emerges, giving the sculptures an intriguing sense of depth. Her recent series move in several directions. Flowing structures emphasize movement and lightness. Folded structures, developed within the series Living Stream, speak of resilience and the currents of life: the paths we walk and the flows that carry us. Cocoonlike shapes evoke skins and shells that have been shed, symbols of transformation, protection and renewal. At the heart of her work lies the interplay between fragility and strength, openness and enclosure, connection and flow. Her sculptures invite reflection and communication, offering an experience of the relationship between oneself, others and the world around us.
