Clemens Briels

Clemens Briels, born in Son, the Netherlands, in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both domestically and internationally. His artworks are featured in various renowned art collections, and he was the first Dutch artist to be chosen as an “Official Olympic Artist” for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. Behind each of Clemens Briels' artworks lies a story; his pieces are like small anecdotes from a counter-culture perspective. Briels has developed his own style, which he calls ANTIPODISM: rather than depicting stereotypes or learned conventions, he imagines the opposite. This approach challenges the viewer with a different, imaginative perspective on everyday things, often leading to surprises. Briels captures his experiences from travels in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional music from Central and South America serves as a seemingly endless source of inspiration. Cuban son, mambo, merengue, and souk, with their subtly sensual undertones, inspire him to create intriguing paintings. Clemens Briels’ artworks are timeless and reflect universal themes, cosmopolitan representations of daily life. He translates his experiences in his own way, creating a unique, imaginative world. Color is his tool, and storytelling is his message. By presenting images that differ from the expected, he stimulates the viewer’s imagination. Since we are often taught to see things in stereotypical ways rather than through creative interpretations, Briels’ work continually surprises the viewer. Briels does not limit himself to painting on canvas or creating three-dimensional objects. He has designed dining chairs for Leolux—such as the Antipodes and Kleio’s—and even upholstered fifty Ford Ka cars with his textile designs. He also creates sculptures, glasswork, and carpets.
