Herman Brood
Herman Brood was born in Zwolle on November 5, 1946. From a young age, drawing was always a way for Brood to express his boundless imagination, and that never changed. This creativity was also channeled for many years through his music, though in the final years of his life, the artist Herman Brood became more prominent. At twelve, Brood began playing the piano. At seventeen, he left for the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, but music quickly took precedence over his studies. In 1964, he formed the beat group "The Moans," spending significant time in Germany. Later, he joined "Cuby and the Blizzards" at the invitation of Harry Muskee, a collaboration that brought the band great success. In 1976, Brood met Koos van Dijk, who became his manager, and he formed his own band, "Wild Romance." Their first single, "Saturday Night," catapulted Herman Brood to global fame. By the late 1980s, Brood gained increasing recognition as a visual artist—sketch artist, painter, and even poet. While he had primarily worked in black and white in the 1960s and 70s (due to his colorblindness), he now emerged as a versatile genius. Brood used various techniques, working at a fast pace with spray cans, injection needles, markers, paint rollers, and traditional brushes. His art became quicker, more powerful, and less detailed. Details were unnecessary; with just a few bold lines, he would define eyes, nose, and mouth, capturing the essence of a character. His paintings, silkscreens, and lithographs are characterized by bold lines and vibrant primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—with few tonal nuances. Brood enjoyed following his instincts. He admired CoBrA painters, especially Lucebert, who embodied spontaneous, experimental, and exuberant methods. Yet, Brood always maintained a distinct style of his own from a young age. Throughout his life, his paintings were his main source of income and even served as a form of currency; at one point, the tax authorities accepted his artwork as payment for his tax debt.
