James Joyce
James Joyce began his career as a graphic designer and later transitioned to illustration, working for major clients like Apple, Nike, and The New York Times. In 2015, he gained international recognition when he was invited to exhibit at Banksy’s parody of Disneyland, “Dismaland.” There, he showcased his video installation Perseverance in the Face of Absurdity, a rotating, crumbling smiley face. The piece sold out shortly after the opening night. Joyce is known for his unique reinterpretations of universal symbols, like the smiley face. With a bold and humorous approach, he challenges himself to make these icons his own while retaining their recognizable qualities. His work is dynamic, often colorful, and seemingly simple. A graduate of Walsall College of Art and Kingston University, Joyce currently lives and works in London, where he has already made his mark at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Saatchi Gallery. In 2016, his exhibition 100 Likes was featured in the high-fashion concept store Colette in Paris, along with a range of merchandise. His famous Collapsed Smiley can now be found on items such as clothing, scented candles, skateboards, and lighters. As of now, his work is also represented by De Kunsthuizen.
