KAWS
Brian Donnelly (1974), internationally known as KAWS, grew up in New Jersey and has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary pop culture. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, he worked as an illustrator for Disney. By night, however, he pursued a different direction: as a graffiti artist, he altered advertisements in public spaces, inserting his own distinct visual language. What began in New York soon expanded to cities such as Berlin, Paris, London, and Tokyo. During this period, he also developed his own characters, clearly rooted in popular culture yet transformed through his signature style - clean outlines, bold color fields, and the now-iconic X-shaped eyes. His international breakthrough came through art toys. In 1999, he collaborated with the Japanese company Bounty Hunter to release Companion. With subtle references to classic cartoon figures and a highly recognizable aesthetic, the piece quickly became a collector’s item; the first edition of 500 sold out almost instantly. KAWS moves effortlessly between art and commerce and is often compared to Andy Warhol. His work spans a wide spectrum, from accessible merchandise to major auction results, including the sale of The Kaws Album at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2019 for $14.7 million. His impact is equally visible in fashion. He has collaborated with streetwear brands such as Supreme and Bape, as well as luxury houses like Dior and Louis Vuitton. He has also designed album covers for artists including Kanye West.lbum covers for artists like Kanye West.
