Lidia Masllorens

Born in 1967 in Caldes de Malavella and graduated in Fine Arts at Barcelona University in 1991, Lidia Masllorens is a Spanish painter who was exhibited regularly in Spain since 1991. She begins an international career with a solo exhibition in Paris and one in Los Angeles in 2016 “ I am drawn to a moderate, not total, abstraction. An image that remains in that specific transition of creation that allows the observer to interpret the painting precisely. But one that also allows the opportunity to sense implicit realities, to recreate what you have created. In short, to dream. Yes, I paint faces. I paint faces because portraits have always fascinated me. One look is more telling than two hundred words. The imperceptible movement of a pair of lips can better express feeling than an entire paragraph”. Painting being her lifelong passion, Lidia also has a love for photography, etching and large scale sculptures. Her monotypes are an archetypal portrait of the early twenty-first century. Her works of large size have a strong presence and exude dynamism and vitality. And this is all the more remarkable because it is a work on paper, a work of colour withdrawal, using water and bleach, and not of layering. This technique allows for the beautiful colour palette that sets her work apart; with shades from pink to white and from black to grey. Lídia’s strokes are sharp and quick, which causes many losses and failures when paired with the destructive nature of bleach and the unpredictable behaviour of water. Lídia embraces her unique spin on the watercolour technique. She wants the paper to suck up the water so it can warp and bend, the water to run down the canvas, the paint to degrade and her strokes to crumble under the bleach.
