Liesbeth Rahder
Liesbeth Rahder studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Rahder paints intuitively, starting with structured color fields across the entire surface, and then adds small icons that can be highly detailed. She also often makes small inscriptions, scratched into the wet paint with a palette knife or the back of a brush. The figurative elements she applies are her signature, and the coherence or conflicts in her work draw the viewer into the painting. This forces the viewer to create their own story. Although the figurative elements are narrative and recognizable, they always seem to follow the inevitable impulse of the brush or palette knife. In doing so, Rahder brings out the qualities of the material she is working with. Liesbeth Rahder has produced a beautiful collection of prints, and her original works are typically created in oil paint.
