Lucas Thorik
The Hague-based artist Lucas Thorik (1973) is considered an exceptionally innovative figure in the realm of abstract painting. With his monumental canvases, in which Thorik explores abstract expressionism by blending traditional painting techniques with neon colors and street art elements, he has quickly garnered international attention. Thorik grew up in an artistic family, where the primary focus was on painting. However, his artistic upbringing, filled with numerous gallery and museum visits, did not lead him directly down the path his family envisioned for him. At a young age, he chose to carve his own path, finding his creative challenge in the realms of music, design, philosophy, and the surf and street art scene. This has resulted in the open-minded and universal approach to aesthetics that is clearly evident in Thorik's work today. Unconventionally, Thorik avoids external art historical inspiration, preferring a pure and personal exploration of abstraction and balance. Despite this internal process, the influences of music and design are clearly reflected in his work. Expressive neon touches echo the sound frequencies of techno and house music, reminiscent of the experimental musical patterns he explored throughout his career as a DJ.
