Marcel Terrani
Duitsland
The creations of Cologne-based artist Marcel Terrani (1969) are collected by art collectors and investors from around the world. His works are difficult to categorize under one label. At first glance, they may resemble Pop Art, but his creations prove to be much more intense and refined in multiple aspects. The artist himself describes his style as Neo Pop Art. Marcel Terrani’s work follows the tradition of décollage. In the creation of a décollage, posters were manipulated, cut up, and altered in the original process. This innovative method emerged in the 1950s and was pioneered by the renowned artist Mimmo Rotella. Terrani improved the décollage technique using contemporary digital media. In his work, he combines various styles and multimedia techniques. The use of Terrani’s digital process clearly recalls the tradition of Richard Hamilton. For Hamilton, the use of computers holds as much value as the traditional paintbrush in fine art, and he played a major role in establishing the significance of digital techniques in Pop Art. Terrani’s décollages represent fragments, thoughts, observations, and sometimes even short stories, revealing details that were overlooked in the original images. Icons of today’s fast-paced life, such as Paris Hilton as 'Stupirella,' David Beckham as 'The Ribbelin Kid,' Heidi Klum, and Angelina Jolie, appear, as do reflections on the fleeting nature of Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Romy Schneider, and James Dean. His updated décollages are pluralistic, blending an era of retrospectives with a careful journalistic and biographical approach, laying a new foundation in collage art. From this perspective, Terrani intelligently uses contemporary techniques, and his timeless fragments are a significant addition to contemporary art movements and photography.
