Micha Klein
Bali
Micha Klein (1964) Micha Klein, born in Harderwijk, graduated in 1989 from the Rietveld Academy as the first artist to earn a BA in computer graphics. His work, showcased worldwide in prestigious galleries and museums, combines digital techniques with influences from art history and pop culture. Using vibrant colors and glossy surfaces, Klein creates digital "paintings" that appear playful and colorful at first glance, yet reveal deeper themes of beauty and the impact of modern culture. His series, including Virtualistic Vibes, Artificial Beauty, and Icon, Idol and Fetishes, are loved for their unique style and the interplay between kitsch and reflection. In addition to his work as an artist, Klein gained recognition as a VJ, making a breakthrough in the international club scene, where his art became an integral part of nightlife and digital culture. The concept of a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’—an artwork that brings together multiple dimensions of life—plays a key role in his oeuvre, where club culture and mysticism converge. His work is part of collections at institutions such as LACMA in Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Groninger Museum. In 1998, he had a major retrospective at the Groninger Museum, followed by exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo, and San Francisco.
