Michel Comte

The world-famous photographer Michel Comte made his debut in the Netherlands in 2018 with his solo exhibition "Thirty Years and 5 Minutes" at Kunsthuis Amsterdam. The exhibition featured an exceptional selection of photographs that encapsulated the spirit of the 1990s and 2000s. Gisele Bündchen, Daryl Hannah, Miles Davis, Mike Tyson, Sofia Coppola, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, Don King—these are just some of the names showcased in an exhibition that offered a unique view of the work of one of the most sought-after fashion and magazine photographers in the world. Born in Zurich, Switzerland (1954), and a self-taught photographer, Comte received his first international advertising assignment in 1979 from Karl Lagerfeld for the fashion house Chloé. Within a few years, Comte became one of the world’s most in-demand fashion and magazine photographers, working on campaigns for prestigious brands like Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Nike, and Lancôme. He developed a distinctive style, with his photos appearing in top international magazines like *Vogue*, *Vanity Fair*, and *Harper's Bazaar*. Michel Comte began his career restoring contemporary art, specializing in the works of artists such as Andy Warhol and Yves Klein. This foundation gave him an understanding of an art world far broader than just photography. It provided him with the depth to view fashion and style as progressive art forms that are constantly evolving. In recent years, Comte has also built an impressive body of work in reportage photography. Working for the International Red Cross (IRC), he traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Africa, capturing powerful images that vividly depict the horrors of war and famine. In 2004, Michel Comte founded his own charity, dedicated to providing access to drinking water in developing countries. From fashion photography for *Vogue* to humanitarian work for the Red Cross, Michel Comte has left his mark on every genre he has pursued. His work is included in the most prestigious collections, exhibited in museums worldwide, and attracts significant international interest at auctions. For example, his photo of Carla Bruni for the "Safe Sex Campaign," featured in Kunsthuis Amsterdam, sold for 100,000 euros at a Sotheby’s auction. Through his body of work, Michel Comte consistently transcends the boundaries of traditional fashion or portrait photography.
