Peter Donkersloot
Peter Donkersloot was born in 1959 in Arnhem. He grew up in the forests of the Veluwe but also spent an important part of his youth in the Betuwe. This later proved to have a significant influence on his work, particularly on his ‘Dutch Landscape Paintings,’ with their numerous water scenes reflecting the characteristic Dutch skies. After attending the Arnhem Art Academy in the late 1970s, he worked for several years as a commercial artist and illustrator for renowned agencies like FHV-BBDO. This career path was expected, as his father, Piet Donkersloot, was also a well-known illustrator. In the mid-1980s, at the age of twenty-six, Peter began to feel a pull toward his true passion and found it increasingly difficult to reconcile his commercial work with his deep love for painting freely. When his father passed away in 1986, Peter decided to take a chance on following his dream. Peter Donkersloot paints at a fast pace and can be found in his studio day and (especially) night. His highly distinctive works have attracted a large following, with exhibitions regularly selling out, and he is increasingly exhibiting internationally. Unfortunately, success has brought challenges as well; many counterfeit works by Peter Donkersloot have surfaced, and galleries continue to sell forgeries. To combat this, Peter now publishes an exclusive list of names and addresses of the galleries that represent him (visit www.peterdonkersloot.nl) to help buyers find authentic works.
