Pierre Marie Brisson

Pierre Marie Brisson (1955, France) is an artist who seems to have stepped right out of a history book. Observing the color palette of this French artist, it’s easy to imagine what the palette of Nero’s artist Fabulus (creator of the frescoes of the Domus Aurea) must have looked like. Brisson’s blend of aubergine, Mediterranean red, antique blue, and earthy beige feels like it has been brought from the past into the present. This does not indicate an obsession with the past, but rather a unique ability to evoke fossil-like impressions with a single brushstroke, allowing the viewer to wander into historical reverie. Brisson’s work sometimes leans toward a graphic style, featuring a composition of bold color blocks interspersed with organic shapes. At other times, he places human figures at the center, often solitary and in motion within a vast setting. His choice of materials is also monumental; he uses heavy, handmade paper that exudes a natural texture. This paper serves as the foundation for various printmaking techniques, with Carborundum, lithography, screen printing, woodcut, acrylic, and oil applied individually or in combination to create the final piece. Pierre Marie Brisson is an internationally renowned artist. In addition to numerous private collections, his works are housed in major institutions such as the Museum of Art (Fort Lauderdale), George Pages Museum (Los Angeles), Musée d’Art et d’Histoire (Belfort), Fine Art Museum (San Francisco), and the Städtisches Museum (Gelsenkirchen), to name just a few.
