Rankin
Rankin rose to fame in 1992 by co-founding the iconic magazine Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack. The magazine provided a platform for emerging creatives and quickly gained a cult following, setting trends and elevating fashion's brightest talents. Today, Dazed Media is a prominent online fashion and cultural brand. Rankin’s work includes high-profile editorial and ad campaigns for brands like Nike, Swatch, Dove, and Pantene. He has shot covers for Elle, Vogue, Esquire, and Rolling Stone, consistently challenging social norms and perceptions of beauty. In 2001, he and Hack launched AnOther Magazine, followed by AnOther Ma* in 2005, combining intelligent editorial with cutting-edge design. Known for his intimate, humorous portrait style, Rankin has photographed figures from supermodels and rock bands to politicians and royalty. Though often considered a celebrity photographer, he has dedicated much of his career to capturing “real people,” revealing a deep passion for authentic portraiture. Always fearless in his creativity, Rankin’s images have become icons of modern culture. Rankin has published over 30 books, with his work exhibited worldwide. His “It’s Glam Up North” exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool in 2015 attracted over 100,000 visitors, ending with a charity auction for Claire House Children’s Hospice. He has also explored photography through TV documentaries with the BBC, including The Seven Photographs That Changed Fashion and Alive: In the Face of Death. His charity work has taken him globally, recently to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya with Oxfam. In 2009, Rankin undertook Rankin Live, photographing over 1,600 people off the streets in an interactive exhibition. The images were retouched, printed, and displayed within half an hour, demonstrating his commitment to democratizing photography. In 2011, he established Rankin Film Productions, creating music videos, commercials, and short films, including *The Lives of Saints*, which won the grand jury prize at the Salento International Film Festival. That same year, Rankin launched Hunger, a biannual fashion and culture magazine, along with Hunger TV, a video-based digital platform. This return to publishing highlighted his understanding of both print and digital media’s future. Rankin lives in London with his wife, Tuuli, and son, Lyle.
