Titus Brein
Titus Brein (1966) trained as a photographer at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg. Following his studies, Titus delved into various fields of photography, ranging from documentary, catwalk, and fashion photography to portraiture and corporate-editorial work. This in-depth exploration of each field, combined with his upbringing in an artist family, fostered a unique cross-pollination of influences. Titus quickly developed a broad perspective on artistry and an unmistakable identity that resonates across all aspects of his photography. Driven by technical craftsmanship and an early passion for artisanal painting, Titus Brein gradually developed a fascinating new form of fine art photography: *photo phusion*. This technique, pioneered by Titus, allows him to explore the boundaries between visual reality and fantasy. He combines contemporary photographic, etching, and digital techniques with oil paint, glass, print, linen, paper, ink, textiles, and precious metals to create a new image, giving the final artwork a surprising dimension reminiscent of the great masters of past centuries. Titus’ *photo phusion* results in a unique fusion of photography and mixed painting techniques, each enhancing and liberating the other without falling into visual clichés. Two-dimensional images sometimes become three-dimensional, serene, transparent, and dynamic, with light playing a key role in the experience of the artwork, which seems to communicate with the viewer. His work embodies a captivating refinement, often with a tactile quality—rebellious, monumental, compelling, and timeless—that evokes the spirit of the great Dutch masters in a contemporary context.
