Yolanda Yolanda Philippens
Yolanda Philippens was born in Rotterdam in 1956 and spent her youth in Vlaardingen. From a young age, she knew she wanted to draw, paint, and sculpt. She studied at TeHaTex in Delft and St. Lucas in Kapellen, Belgium. In creating her work, Yolanda Philippens draws inspiration primarily from weathered and dilapidated buildings, walls, and impressions of landscapes. She showcases the beauty of decay on canvas, allowing her paintings to speak through thick layers of oil paint and mixed techniques. Her work is characterized by a powerful and intriguing interplay of material, technique, and abstract expression. One can recognize traces of fields, flower meadows, snowy landscapes, and trees. Signs of crumbling structures, washed-up ships, and scrap metal weave together the narrative. Muddy, plowed fields and frozen landscapes are shaped through layers of oil paint. Layer upon layer, a landscape emerges, a memory of an image from the past, whether passing by in a car, walking in the heath, on the beach, or painting in the field. The viewer is given the space to discover or recognize their own image. Yolanda Philippens lives and works in Antwerp. In 1983, she exhibited at the Singer Museum in Laren, and since then, her work has been displayed at exhibitions and fairs both domestically and internationally.
