Zerrou

Khalid Zerrou (1978) and Rachid Zerrou (1982) are Dutch artists and brothers, born in Leiden. Working together under the name Zerrou, they create geometric artworks in which craftsmanship, technology and mathematical precision come together. Their work is influenced by geometry, natural structures and their Moroccan heritage, drawing on the rich tradition of Islamic geometric patterns. Both artists have a technical background, which forms an important foundation for their collaborative practice. Using digital design techniques, they explore form, rhythm and repetition before carefully constructing each composition by hand. Paper is the primary material within their oeuvre. By precisely cutting, folding, shaping and assembling the material, they create three-dimensional elements that are repeated and combined into complex patterns. Light and shadow play an essential role, enhancing the spatial quality of the work. Nature and the visual language of Moroccan and Islamic architecture play an important role in their work. Geometric patterns found in mosaics and tilework, including those of the Alhambra in Granada, are recurring elements. Their work also shows influences of Op Art, with its focus on optical illusion and movement. Characteristic of Zerrou’s work is the balance between precision and movement. Depending on the viewer’s position and the incidence of light, depth, shadow and perspective continuously shift. In this way, the brothers combine traditional geometric principles with modern techniques and craftsmanship to create a distinctive contemporary visual language.
