Mimmo Rotella

Mimmo Rotella (1918 – 2006), Italian visual artist, is known for being one of the earliest pioneers of Pop Art. In the lackluster Rome of Fellini's La Dolce Vita, Rotella experimented with new forms of communication, such as advertising, film, and politics, ten years ahead of the later Pop Art movements. He would tear posters from the walls of the Eternal City, paste them onto canvas, and manipulate them to create a new vision of mass media by removing them from their usual context and tearing them apart. By ripping apart the iconic faces of the silver screen, he removed them from collective imagination and, with dynamic enthusiasm, transformed them into works of art. His paintings of Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, and John Wayne acquire a new significance through Rotella's intelligent interpretation, turning idols into reflections of a society marked by dehumanization, often with a touch of humor in the tradition of Nouveau Réalisme.
