Saturday, September 27 & Sunday, September 28 | 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
During Kunstroute Leiden, Ángeles Nieto will be present at Kunsthuis Leiden to meet visitors personally and share insights into her work.
Ángeles Nieto (Madrid, 1963) is a Spanish artist who has lived and worked in the Netherlands since the late 1980s. She studied Art History at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid before continuing her education in Fine Arts in Maastricht. After working as a graphic designer and illustrator for ten years, she developed a diverse artistic practice. Today, Nieto exhibits internationally, with solo and group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Japan, among other countries.
Nieto is best known for her distinctive wire sculptures: drawings in space, created from tightly stretched aluminium wire. She describes this technique as "wire embroidery". Through an interplay of tension, knots, and delicate adjustments, she creates open structures in which light, movement, and poetry come together. Her sculptures appear almost weightless, establishing a subtle dialogue with the surrounding space.
Reflecting on her work, Nieto explains:
"My wire art translates movement into line, silence into form. The wire captures not only contours, but also the intangible: emptiness, shadow, memory. I see my work as a whispering sculpture: light, yet charged; still, yet alive. In this way, I seek connection with space, with emotion, and with the viewer."
Alongside her sculptural work, Nieto creates paintings on canvas, combining acrylic paint, oil pastels, and ink. Her colourful, layered compositions bring together figures, animals, and abstract forms. Her Spanish heritage is clearly reflected in these works, with rhythm, symbolism, and vitality serving as recurring sources of inspiration. For Nieto, colour is more than a visual element; it conveys emotion, meaning, and movement.
Her artistic practice also encompasses other disciplines, including screen printing, photography, collage, wood engraving, and bronze. What connects her diverse body of work is an ongoing exploration of the tension between the visible and the invisible, between material and emotion.
