Daniël Martin

Daniël Martin (1982) lives and works in Leiden, the Netherlands. His work combines powerful brushstrokes with refined details. Inspired by Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock, he uses his entire body to create his paintings. His approach balances between spontaneous expression and controlled precision. Daniël excels at creating portraits of distorted faces. It appears as though the portraits have been intentionally damaged after first being fully developed. This deformation is a recurring element in his work. He draws inspiration from natural imperfections, such as growths on trees, and explores the interplay between order and disorder. The faces in his paintings disappear, reappear, or merge with their surroundings, challenging the viewer to see identity and beauty in a different way. In addition to painting, Martin also works with 3D techniques, including sculptures he creates using digital printers. In these works, he explores the same play of transformation and distortion, blending digital and physical elements. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Querétaro, the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen, the Museum of Young Art in Oosterhout, Booth Gallery in New York, Beers Gallery in London, Den Gallery in Kuwait, and Thinkspace in Los Angeles. In addition to his work as an artist, Martin is co-founder of Arthouse, an initiative that organizes art projects and manages two artist-in-residence programs in the Netherlands and Mexico. In 2019, he launched the 1606 Project, a platform for international collaboration between artists, in partnership with PaintGuide, Leiden University, and local partners in the Netherlands and Mexico. Daniël Martin regularly collaborates with Mexican artist Santiago Pani. Their joint projects explore identity and perception, combining painting, 3D techniques, and experimental forms.
