Jos Verwiel

As a sea sailor, Jos Verwiel discovered the Mediterranean world. After spending time in Spain and Turkey, he eventually settled in Greece on the Peloponnese. There, he found an abundance of inspiration, with the bright light of the Aegean Sea sparking his current intensely colorful canvases. His work is not a naturalistic representation but rather an interpretation of impressions transformed into autonomous abstract images. His designs are simple, but their execution is complex. Collage techniques create a layered composition, in which he, like an archaeologist, buries and then re-exposes forms within the paint on the canvas, as if uncovering traces of our contemporary culture. The contrast between monumental compositions with mathematical planes and the intricate, amorphous detailing in glossy, vivid colors makes his work unique. In these contemporary icons, Verwiel pushes the limits of the flat surface, sometimes hinting at depth through physical forms in unusual perspectives, compressed or stretched across his large canvases. Jos Verwiel studied at the art academies in Tilburg and 's-Hertogenbosch and undertook study trips to England, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Spain, and Morocco. He received government grants for various projects, held teaching positions at Dutch art academies, exhibited widely, and participated in art events in numerous galleries and museums across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England, and Greece. His work has been commissioned and acquired by private collectors, companies, and government institutions. Articles about his work have appeared in various art columns, newspapers, books, and magazines.
