Santiago Pani
Santiago Pani (1990) is a Mexican artist currently living and working in Leiden, The Netherlands. He grew up in Tequisquiapan, a small village near Mexico City, surrounded by artists—his father, Knut Pani, being an established artist himself. This environment made art an inevitable and natural path for him. He studied at La Esmeralda (ENPEG, Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado) in Mexico City, where he began developing his distinct visual language. From early in his career, Santiago has been driven by a search for a pictorial language that is uniquely his own, one that transcends artistic trends and resonates on a subconscious level. His work explores the human figure as a fragmented memory, inspired by anonymous characters—those fleeting faces we encounter in dreams, in passing glances, or in the depths of our subconscious. These figures exist at the threshold of recognition, surfacing and dissolving, much like the way our minds reconstruct forgotten moments. Recently, his practice has leaned towards abstraction, playing with the invisible threshold of perception—questioning which elements are essential for something to be recognized as a face, and which can be removed before it ceases to be one. This exploration echoes the philosophical inquiry of representation: when does something become, or stop being, what it is? Much like the conceptual study of a chair—whether real, photographed, or drawn—Santiago’s work questions the fundamental nature of images and symbols. His latest series expands on these ideas through a playful and intuitive approach. Embracing spontaneity, the process connects to a childlike state of creation, where gesture, stain, and accident become active forces in shaping meaning. The interplay between control (line) and randomness (stain) reflects a dialogue between free will and predetermined chaos, reinforcing the idea that perception is always in flux. Santiago’s work is an invitation to observe how we recognize, remember, and construct reality—whether in a dream, on a canvas, or within the contours of our subconscious.
