Vincent Vincent Peters

Vincent Peters, born in 1969 in Bremen, took his first steps into the world of photography when, at twenty, he moved to New York and began working as a photographer's assistant. In 1999, his career as a fashion photographer took off under the guidance of the renowned Giovanni Testino agency. Within a year, Vincent Peters was shooting global campaigns for prestigious brands and major fashion houses, including Yves Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, and Wolfgang Joop. He developed a distinct style, and his photos have appeared in international magazines like Vogue, GQ, Numéro, Glamour, and The Sunday Times. Vincent has built an impressive portfolio and captured many of the world’s most famous figures in a style reminiscent of Hollywood’s 1950s aesthetic. His work relies entirely on the classical art of portrait photography, with carefully crafted lighting and the use of analog cameras contributing to the breathtaking cinematic quality of his black-and-white images. Many iconic photos come from private moments shared between photographers and their models during shoots originally booked for other purposes. This is true of masters of visual seduction like Helmut Newton and certainly of Vincent Peters. Regardless of who is in front of his camera, Peters always strives for an ultimate form of authenticity—a depiction of a spontaneous, intense encounter between photographer and model. “It’s not so much the physical image that counts, but the impression that stays with you.” The work of 20th-century studio photographers, like George Hurrell with his large-format cameras, echoes through Peters’ images. “I am a traditionalist,” says Peters. “Do you know Midnight in Paris, the Woody Allen film? That’s me—wandering around Paris, hoping to bump into someone who lived a hundred years ago. You can see that in my photos: a nostalgia for a world with more grain. Nowadays, everything is so digital. I only shoot analog. In my opinion, digital photography doesn’t convey truth; it’s like a washable surface. It offers too much control and leaves no room for chance, and that spontaneous image is precisely what I’m looking for.” Vincent Peters compares the simplicity and understated power of his black-and-white compositions to music. “Music is defined by the notes you don’t play. By stripping the image of all distractions, I try to seduce with a simple and timeless melody that always stays with you. There’s already enough noise around us.”
