William Sweetlove

William Sweetlove is a post-modern artist known for his contemporary still lifes, characterized by a profound desire to observe, consume, and reproduce the everyday. Sweetlove studied plastic arts in Ghent and received significant awards early in his career, including accolades from the Young Belgian Painting and the Europe Prize for Painting from the city of Ostend, along with international recognition and grants. A complete overview of his artistic endeavors would require a full book. During the "Contemporary Art Triennial" in Knokke in 2003, William Sweetlove met the North Italian art collective known as the Cracking Art Group. Although the members of the collective are diverse and independent, they share a strong affinity for Dadaism, minimalism, surrealism, and pop art. The encounter between Sweetlove and the Cracking Art Group led to their first exceptional collaboration: Cracking Art loves William Sweetlove. The Cracking Art Group has evolved into more than just a collective of like-minded artists; it is becoming a movement. Just as the Renaissance, Futurism, Arte Povera, and Transavanguardia marked their eras, Arte Stupifacente (crazy art) is emerging as the defining trend of Cracking Art. The group distances itself from the remnants of conceptual art, aiming to leave behind a better, more enjoyable, and especially more colorful world, unafraid to address contemporary controversial issues. The name 'Cracking Art' is derived from the basic materials used by the artists. These materials come from petroleum, a fossil material derived from plants and natural remains. Through the molecular cracking of this fossil material (cracking down), synthetic derivatives such as PVC, plastic, polyester, and resins are created. Working with these materials leads to a form of fossil art that is biologically non-degradable, allowing it to exist indefinitely. In 2007, the Cracking Art Museum opened in Biella (between Milan and Turin), Italy. For the first time in history, a group of artists will direct their own museum. The Cracking Art Museum, spanning over 9,000 square meters, includes a permanent collection titled "Arte Stupifacente," Cracking Art, and 2,000 square meters dedicated to rotating exhibitions of young artists. William Sweetlove now exhibits both solo and alongside the Cracking Art Group worldwide and has a stable representation in countries such as Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Scandinavia, Turkey, the United States, and Belgium. Numerous books have been dedicated to the work of these artists, and Sweetlove's works have been acquired by museums and prominent private and corporate collections.
